Meet Ali Luempert, the next person in our #FirstYearFeature series. Ali is the Lead Academic Advisor for the University Advising Discovery! Program.

“The Discovery! Program here at University Advising can help any student at Texas Tech find their best fit major by exploring themselves, researching their options on campus and investigating future careers and I want to help you find your best fit major. Come see me.” –Ali Luempert

Q: What services does your office have for First Year Students at Texas Tech University?

Discovery! is a process through which we work with students to help them find their best fit major. We utilize some resources on campus and also ask the student to do some “homework” so they can uncover their skills, interests and values. Then we discuss these and relate them to academic and career options.

We are here to help students navigate Texas Tech and find the resources they need to be successful.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

Working with a student and getting to the “A HA!” moment when they find their perfect academic and career path!

Q: What is your favorite thing about Texas Tech and why?

Everyone here is really friendly. It makes it easy to ask for help and to get students pointed to a good resource that I know will help them!

Q: What is your favorite spot on campus?

I love walking through Memorial Circle, from any angle. It’s such a great perspective of campus.

Q: What advice would you give first year students?

GO TO CLASS! GO TO OFFICE HOURS / talk to your advisor! Make a buddy in every class!

Q: Looking back to your first year, what would you change? What would you do the same?

I wish I would have asked for help more often instead of thinking I’m invincible or things will somehow, miraculously, turnaround. Life works if you work at it.

I am really glad I worked on campus! It allowed me to meet a lot of people and be a part of campus.

Q: What is your favorite place to eat in Lubbock?

Italian Garden! I’m kind of a food snob, and this is definitely the best Italian in town (aside from my kitchen, of course)!

Q: What are some hobbies you have?

Grad School. Prior to that- I love to read, I enjoy yoga, I have two crazy dogs and an equally entertaining partner that keep me busy.

Q: What is your favorite Tech Tradition?

The Masker Rider! What a powerful visual image, and I like that it’s often a female rider.

 More about the Discovery! Program

Discovery Process

Discovery! is who we are…

Here at TTUA major exploration is a part of almost everything we do. It’s one of the founding principles of our office, and it guides our advising appointments, presentations, student interactions, involvement with other offices on campus, and professional development. We believe that every student needs to explore, not only to determine a best-fit major, but also to find a Plan B. Sometimes that Plan B is a back-up plan for when things don’t go as well as you had hoped. Other times that Plan B is a stair-step plan to help you get to where you want to go. We want you to have multiple ideas and directions in mind so that you’re more prepared when some unexpected event arrives.
