First Year Feature- Kathy Nordstrom




Meet Kathy Nordstrom, the next person in our #FirstYearFeature series. Kathy is the Lead Academic Advisor for the College of Visual & Performing Arts.

“I love working with students.  They provide so much energy.  Working with students from different situations, different circumstances, different problems and trying to find solutions to help them get to where they want to be is a great experiences.  I want every student to be treated the way I would want my children to be treated, and I have very high standards for them.” –Kathy Nordstrom

Q: What services does your office have for First Year Students at Texas Tech University?

Advisors are available to visit with students as needed.  We do have mandatory advising in each unit every semester.  But students can come to the office with any issue for assistance.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
Working with students.  I have been advising for 26 years and really enjoy working with students.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Texas Tech and why?
Students, they bring energy with them.

Q: What is your favorite spot on campus?
My office where I meet with students.

Q: What advice would you give first year students?
Get to know your professors/instructors.  Always be willing to ask for help/assistance.  If you do not know where to go for help/assistance, visit with your advisor.  Participate in events on the campus and your major area.

Q: Looking back to your first year, what would you change? What would you do the same?
I would not change anything.  Working with students is a joy and a blessing.  Each student brings their own unique circumstances with them and it is enjoyable working with them.

Q: What is your favorite place to eat in Lubbock?
My home, I can always get what I want and have great company – my husband.

Q: What are some hobbies you have?
Reading, Mahjong

The College of Visual & Performing Arts offers a diverse array of programs and courses in art, music, theatre and dance.
